Prayer of Jabez

There are many ways to pray and often at times people look for ways on how to pray. At times people seek what time and what’s  the best prayers to pray. One very popular type of prayer among believers is the Prayer of Jabez. This is a prayer that originated from the story of Jabez. It was his desire to expand, to enlarge his borders. Many have also linked that type of prayer to the book of Isaiah 54: 1 where it talks about “enlargement of the tents’.

The original Prayer of Jabez is found in 1 Chronicles 4: 9-10

Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother named him Jabez saying, "Because I bore him with pain." Now Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, "Oh that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from harm that it may not pain me!" And God granted him what he requested. (NASB)

So the prayer of Jabez is about enlargement and a heart desire for blessing. It is more than about being selfish, this is God’s desire to bless his children. One also has to put it into context this prayer. Moses had given them an option to get the blessing or the curses. Having said that, we can go through the bible and we can certainly see far too many times God promising blessings to his children. In Deuteronomy 11:22-28, in relation to the Mosaic Covenant of which all Israel was familiar, Moses says the following: “For if you are careful to keep all this commandment which I am commanding you to do, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and hold fast to Him, then the Lord will drive out all these nations from before you, and you will dispossess nations greater and mightier than you. Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours, your border will be from the wilderness to Lebanon, and from the river, the river Euphrates, as far as the western sea.  No man will be able to stand before you; the Lord your God will be the dread of you and the fear of you on all the land on which you set foot, as He has spoken to you.  See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse; the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I am commanding you today; and the curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the Lord your God…” 

So hereby the children of Israelites had the option to get blessings or curses. Also the element of enlargement meant that he would be able to get more territory by driving out the other nations greater than him. One thing that is critical to understand is that one dispossess to possess, its both a spiritual and natural law. So for Jabez to enlargement he had to drive out some nations or people as per the words of Moses. This is exactly how it is today, in the natural and in the realm of the spirit.

The prayer of Jabez is very relevant in the 21^st century in a big way. In today’s world to enlarge one’s tents may include things like increased spheres of influence, actual land, industries or even gaining influence in government. This is more than being selfish, since believers are the light of the world, then its only makes sense that the light must be exposed to as many places as possible.

So having said, the Prayer of Jabez is in line with God’s will. However, there are many other crucial aspects of prayer that are essential today, prophetic intercession, kingly intercession etc. One of the most important is prophetic intercession, this is very important for the life of every believer.

How to pray

The subject of prayer is a very facinating subject. Its a subject that shows how much the created need to be in contact with its Creator. How to pray, is a key part of anyone who has faith. Whilst there are many ways of praying, different situations call for different types of prayer mode.

To the average person, prayer is just prayer. However, that may not necessarily be true. The way someone prays for healing and the way someone prays for covering are different things and require different ways. The same as the way someone prays for something like deliverance.

So I think this then proves that different requests or prayer needs call for different ways to pray. I have been involved in this area for many years in different churches, from Africa to the land of Australia. So I have a good idea of whats out there.

Having said that, I think I can safely say, there is need across many places to properly teach people how to pray. One of the key things I have found missing in many places is understand the art of prophetic intercession or simply, prophetic praying. Its a different praying mode that is specific and on target, the amazing thing or the most important thing is that its God led.

All the same, whether you are new to the subject of prayer or you have spend many years praying for something or things. The Father, always welcomes to encounter and to speak to His children, God loves you so much. I would encourage you to learn how to pray the many various modes of prayer available in the bible and maximise your spiritual life and fulfill purpose and destiny.
